‘SLFP not ready to adhere to any process that will harm the policy and vision of the party’ – President emphasized

President Maithripala Sirisena says the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will join the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) at the forthcoming Presidential Election only if it agrees to the proposal of forming an alliance with the SLFP under a common symbol.

Addressing the SLFP Kurunegala district convention today (29), the President stated that the SLFP is not prepared to launch any programme that will harm the vision of the party or lose the future of its supporters.

Expressing his views, the President said although the Sri Lanka Freedom Party has suffered many setbacks in the history, the party had never perished due to its people centric programmes. He said that regardless of the claims that the SLFP is weakened today, whoever wants to become the next president needs the support of the SLFP and no one should forget that the appointment of the next president will be decided by the SLFP.

The President further emphasized that the aim of the SLFP is to gain power in Parliament in 2020 to elect a government that has more powers than a president who has no power under the present constitution. President Sirisena stressed that the party is working towards achieving this goal as an alliance. He said the new government would take the Motherland forward ruined by the corrupt elite and create a country free of corruption, and free of any foreign power.

The President further added that the existing rift within the government is not down to a personal bitterness between himself and the Prime Minister, but a battle against fraud and corruption, and a battle between concepts of completely corrupted Modern Liberalism and people-friendly principles of great Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

Although the appointment of Mahinda Rajapakse as the Prime Minister replacing Ranil Wickremesinghe did not go according to the plan,  the President claimed that it was not his fault. He further added that it was due to a letter handed over to the Speaker of the Parliament by General Secretary of Sri Lanka Freedom Party that Mahinda Rajapakse is today the opposition leader and SLPP MPs could retain their seats in the Parliament.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Kurunegala district convention was held at the Hettipola Weekly Fairgrounds with the participation of a massive number of people.

Senior Vice President of SLFP Nimal Siripala de Silva, SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara, General Secretary of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Mahinda Amaraweera, SLFP National Organizer Duminda Dissanayake, Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Governor of the North Western Province Peshala Jayaratne were present at the event.
