President Maithripala Sirisena emphasized that he will stand for the security and dignity of all the members of the Armed Forces irrespective of their ranks.
Addressing the 9th Defence Services Games Closing Ceremony – 2016 held at the Panagoda Army Indoor Stadium on August 22 the President said that he will never compromise those responsibilities as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and as the Defence Minister.
The Government is committed to build the security forces as an excellent force recognized by the world while protecting their dignity and pride, he said.
The President further said he vehemently rejects the statement circulate by some section of media and in political platforms by saying that the government is hunting down war heroes. He called upon those who spread those allegations to work towards to protect the pride of Motherland keeping aside the narrow political agendas.
President Sirisena said the Government will provide further sponsorship in the future to develop the talents and athletic abilities of our sportsmen and women who participate in zonal and international competitions.
“A proposal will be submitted to the next cabinet meeting to allocate funds to establish an International Sports Pool to provide new technological knowledge, coaches and other necessary facilities to uplift the standard and quality of those sportsmen and women,” the President said.
The Defence Services Games organized by the Ministry of Sports annually with the aim of taking sportsmen and women to national and international level through developing harmony among them and uplifting athletic abilities of the members of the Tri Forces.
The closing ceremony of the 9th Defence Services Games held in a grand manner under the patronage of the President.
Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardene, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Chief of Defence Staff, Tri Forces’ Commanders and senior security officers participated in this event.
