President emphasizes need for a national program to control diabetes

President Maithripala Sirisena emphasizes the imperative need for a national program to control diabetic which is a major ailment among non-infectious diseases.

The President made these remarks joining the National Diabetes Day walk, held today (Nov. 12) at the Gale Face Grounds. The walk was organized to mark World Diabetes Day.

He proposed to declare a diabetic month to raise awareness on this disease among people. It will be under a national program carried out by the hospitals and health offices island-wide.

President Sirisena pointed out the importance to display the level of sugar in the ingredients of the packets of milk powders. He also said it is important to active the tax imposed on sweet drinks, decided in the last year’s budget. “I will take strict actions against such productions harmful to the health of the people”, he said.

Non-communicable Diseases Unit of the Health Ministry, Diabetes Association of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka College of Endocrinologists organized this walk.

The President who walked up to Galle Face Ground opened the art exhibition held at the site.

Dr Noel Somasundaram presented the Arogya Magazine, published in line with the National Diabetic Day to the President.

Minister Rajitha Senaratne, IGP Pujith Jayasundera, Specialist Doctor Prasad Katulanda, Dr Manilka Sumanathilaka, nurses and the heads of government institutions were among those joined this walk.
