Set aside political agendas when fulfilling obligations towards nature – President

In an era where everyone is aware about the importance of preserving and protecting the nature, no one should work according to a political agenda, President Maithripala Sirisena said.

President reiterated that everyone in the country should commit themselves equally to maintain the equilibrium of the nature for the benefit of future generation while addressing a ceremony at Sumana Central College in Ratnapura to lay the foundation stone for the construction of a three-story building.

It is the responsibility of each and everyone in the society including politicians, government officials, students and the society as a whole to work in unison to meet our duty-bound objective of increasing the forest density to 32 % in the future, President further added.

Expressing his views on the programmes carried out in order to eradicate poverty in the Ratnapura district, President said using toxic substances play a lead role in increasing the level of poverty.

President said that the government is committed to the prevention of drug in the country with the objective of eradicating poverty and enriching the lives of all people. An islandwide drug prevention week from June 23rd has been declared to commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse which falls on 26th June.

President Sirisena unveiled the plaque to mark the commencement of the construction of the proposed three-story building.

The President participated in an event to present mementos to those who excelled in their studies.

A special souvenir was also presented to the President.

Governor of Sabaragamuwa Province Mr. Damma Disanayake, Sri Lanka Freedom Party Organizer Mr. Miyuru Bhashitha Liyanage, Principle Mr. K.A. Weerasinghe and college staff, Parents, Old students were also present.
