People’s representatives not fulfilling their respective responsibilities properly is an issue- President

President Maithripala Sirisena pointed out that fraud, corruption as well as the people’s representatives who have failed to fulfill their respective responsibilities properly, are among the main causes which obstruct the development of the country.

Whatever statements are made at the elections, some people’s representatives are not concerned about attending Sessions of Parliament or to participate in the meetings held at Local Government and Provincial Councils, and as a result of this they will not be able to understand the problems of the people of the country.

He made these remarks participating in a ceremony to vest the new building at the Polonnaruwa Municipal Council, with the public today (10).

Addressing the gathering, the President further said that even though politicians worked in a split based on their respective political party in the election campaign, after they became local government representatives it is their responsibility to commit themselves to serve the people with unity.

President Sirisena also noted that the Mayors and Chairmen of Pradeshiya Sabhas have been vested with executive powers except for the executive presidency, and the Local Government sector is an area where there is no limit to development, and the local government authorities have the opportunity of implementing development projects in any field for the benefit of the public according to the Local Government Act.

This new building was built at a cost of Rs. 190 million under the “Pibidemu Polonnaruwa (Awakening of Polonnaruwa)” District Development Project. After opening of the building by the President he made an observational tour of it.

Minister Vajira Abeywardena, Wasantha Senanayake, the Governor of the North Central Province Sarath Ekanayake, the North Western Province Governor, Peshala Jayaratne, the Mayor of the Polonnaruwa Chanaka Sidath Ranasinghe and others participated on this occasion.

Meanwhile, the newly build Women and Child Abuse Prevention Unit at the Polonnaruwa Police Station was also opened by the President.

The President planted a Sapling at the premises of the Police Station. Senior Police officers including the IGP  Pujith Jayasundara participated on this occasion.

The Kaduruwela new bus halt, built at a cost of Rs. 50.1 million under the “Pibidemu Polonnaruwa (Awakening of Polonnaruwa)” District Development Project was also opened by the President.
