A broad program to uplift sports  – President

President Maithripala Sirisena said an extensive program will be implemented to provide assistance to uplift the field of sports in collaboration with all sectors.

When comparing with the experiences of the last few decades, we have seen a collapse in the field of sports during the recent past, the President said, adding that the Government will correct all the mistakes and will create an environment where our athletes and sportspersons could be able to conquer the world.

He made these observations while participating in a ceremony at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute yesterday (7) to launch Susanthika Jayasinghe Athletic Academy, Susanthika Jayasinghe Sports Fund and to launch ‘ My Story’ Susanthika’s autobiography.

Fifteen years ago, Susanthika Jayasinghe won an Olympic medal for Sri Lanka in Sydney, Australia amid amidst cheers of millions of spectators at the stadium and through visual media.

Susanthika Jayasinghe performed her duties for her motherland, spreading Sri Lanka’s glory to the world, the President said.

She gave the society a great example of how the life could be won by overcoming difficulties and challenges. She did not let her life down with defeats but won the life with courage and determination.

Inauguration of Susanthika Jayasinghe Foundation and her website was held at this occasion.

President Sirisena also presented gifts to Damayanthi Darsha, Sriyani Kulawansa and Sugath Thilakarathne who excelled in the sports sphere in the country.

Minister of Sports Dayasiri Jayasekara, Minister Arjuna Ranathunga, former Sports Ministers, Gamini Lokuge and Mahindananda Aluthgamage also participated in this ceremony.
