Every effort will be taken to safeguard unity of the country and not to divide it – President

There will be no opportunity to divide the country in the efforts towards building a united country, ensuring peace and reconciliation, said President Maithripala Sirisena.

President Sirisena mentioned that there is no truth behind the statements on political stage regarding dividing the country and people should not be misled by such false statements.

Addressing a meeting held in Hakmana, Matara today (6), President Sirisena stated that it is not in the recent past that voices were raised regarding the federal system, but something which was heard throughout a long period of time and no government allowed it and neither would he allow any form of efforts to divide the country into pieces.

President Sirisena stated that it is the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) that always protected the country and SLFP itself is the people’s patriotic movement towards protecting the country more than any other party.

Referring to the statement made by the former President to a TV programme yesterday that he made 400 people in the Presidential secretariat unemployed after coming to power, President Sirisena said that when he came to  the position of the presidency,  there were more than 1600 workers drawing salary from the Presidential Secretariat and 400 of them were drawing  salary from the Presidential Secretariat, while staying away from the Secretariat.

President Sirisena said that Steps were taken to attach employees to appropriate places and secure their jobs, but no one was dismissed from their jobs.  He said that when the SLFP members who were belonging to trade unions of the ministries controlled by the United National Party (UNP), it was he who intervened and instructed to reinstate all of them and also give permanency to the employees who were on contract basis.

The President, referring to the statement made by former President in that particular TV programme that the  threat regarding the electric chair is still prevailing, said that he would not allow anyone to be taken to the electric chair.

President Sirisena invited everybody to join hands without being misled by the conspiracies to disrupt the progressive movement and giving the benefit of it to the corrupted politicians, who formed new parties.

This rally, organized to ensure the victory of the candidates of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), was held in Matara district.

The organizer of this rally, state minister and organizer for the Hakmana Electorate in Matara District, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, secretary general of SLFP, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, Chandima Rasaputhra, Hemal Gunasekara, Wijaya Dahanayake, Nilanga Hendawitharana, Manoj Sirisena, H. G. Sirisena, other Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) organizers and party activists were present at this rally.
