President invites SLFP Women’s Wing to come forward as a strong organization that stand on behalf of harassed migrant female domestic workers
President Maithripala Sirisena says today, the essential need to build the country is to mobilize and unite the people, who love the country and who has sensitivity towards the country, but not which party or which person.
The President addressing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Women’s Day Celebrations held at the Viharamahadevi Open Air Theater in Colombo, today (08) said that the SLFP must provide the leadership in this regard.
During this event, the President invited the SLFP Women’s Wing to come forward as a strong organization that stand on behalf of women of this country, who are facing difficulties and being harassed while working as domestic employees in foreign countries.
The President, who further made remarks on the mothers, sisters and daughters who are involved in foreign domestic employment, who are facing harassment and the tragic incidents are not given proper consideration by the organization which earns huge amounts of money and it is a pathetic situation.
There are regular reports that these women of our country face various harassments even before leaving for domestic work in foreign countries and they also face harassments and violence while abroad as well as after they return to the country, the Prsident said. He described it as a pathetic situation.
He said that the relevant organizations and parties must consider these issues as soon as possible and said that the SLFP, as a people-oriented party must be able to contribute massively on the issues pertaining to women domestic workers.
President Sirisena said that the Women’s Day which falls today should not be merely considered as a day which should be celebrated or a cordial meeting, but it musts be converted in to a day which voices are raised against violence and pressures again women.
The SLFP Women’s Day celebrations were held with the participation of a large number of women from all parts of the country under the theme of ‘mathin thora deshayak – thutin piri kedellak’ today.
The President presented Special Awards and Certificates to selected women with outstanding skills and services. They include Astronomic Scientist, Dilrukshi Sandarekha Kumarasinghe and , astronomical astrologers and women’s officer in charge of the Police Narcotic Bureau Niluka Perera.
Former President Mrs. Chandrika Bandaranaike, Mr. Nimal Siripala de Silva, Mr. Dayasiri Jayasekara, Mr. Thilanga Sumathipala, Mr. Shantha Bandara, Ms. Shriyani Wijewickrama, Ms. Ariyawathi Galappaththi, Sri Lanka Freedom Party Women’s Front President Ms. Priyangani Abeyweera and its Secretary Ms. Chandrika de Soyza and local representatives of women’s organisations of Sri Lanka Freedom Party also participated in this event.
