President assured to end the political unrest of the country by next week

President Maithripala Sirisena says that he will completely end the political unrest of the country by next week. He further said that the decisions will be taken for the benefit of the country, people and for the future of the motherland.

President Sirisena added that he was not the person who created this crisis, but it was the leader of the UNP who drag the country for a disastrous situation. He also said that he extend hands of peace to all political parties and leaders to eliminate that devastating process and to contribute for the good initiative of building the country.

President Maithripala Sirisena made these remarks addressing the special convention of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, yesterday (04).

This convention was organized under the theme ‘Tiranaya Rata Wenuwen’ and a large number of activities of the SLFP participated on this occasion.

Speaking further, the President further said that the extreme liberal political vision of Ranil Wickremesinghe not only destroyed the country, but also completely ruined the concept of good governance. President Sirisena further said that as a result of those policies not only the UNP, but he himself had to face negative consequences. He also added that the only solution with him to answer for this issue is to remove him from the post of Prime Minister.

‘The SLFP has always placed confidence on the people of this country and the only patriotic, humanitarian, political party which can defeat the extreme-liberal political programme of the UNP, to achieve this target the SLFP should strengthen and move forward,’ the President added.

The President also launched the official news website of the SLFP (slfpnews.lk).

The senior leaders of the SLFP and a large number of activists of the party participated on this occasion.

The speech made by H.E. the President addressing the special convention of the SLFP on December 04, 2018 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

Today, I am pleased to meet all of you through a convention like this. I also take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to all relevant parties for their contribution in organizing this event.

Whenever the SLFP faced challenges, the party conquers those challenges with the assistance of the strength of the people. I consider this convention as an important occasion to display that strength of the people as well as to deliver a message to the general public of the country. What is that message? What is the nature and background of this communication? Like me, all of you know the history of the SLFP, everybody in the country knows. This great history has been built up with the political concepts and a philosophy which reflect patriotism, national heritage, our culture and customs. Srimath S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike created a common political platform for all communities including Sinhala, Muslim, Tamil, Malays and  Burghers. The SLFP has always became stronger and nurtured as a great party as a result of its quality of political beheviour.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party is not an empty political party. It is not a party which emerged suddenly. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party emerged to commence a new journey, subsequent to gaining independence from the British imperial rule, eliminating all the political hurdles that obstruct the formation of gatherings which values our heritage. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike created this party with the assistance of contemporary political leaders, friends, allies and fighters. The SLFP which was established in that way, nourished with not only one or two persons. With the blood of S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, with the tears sheds for the deprivation of civic rights of Madam Sirimavo Bandaranaike, with the blood of terrorist attack on Madam Chandrika Bandaranaike as well as with the commitment and blood of C.V. Gunarathne, Lakshman Kadirgamar, Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, D.M. Dasanayake and the tears and blood of the working class of this country, the party developed and nurtured.

The hearts of the common people of this country always won by the strengthen of that political philosophy. The SLFP committed towards the motherland, always stood on behalf of the underprivileged people. The SLFP gave leadership for Labour, Trade Unions.

I must emphasize that the SLFP always should move forward as a powerful force to defeat Ranil Wickremesinghe’s extreme new liberal right-wing political movement. What is the issue that has arisen today? Why did we give you a special convention? Is there is a political unrest in the country or a political crisis or a conflict? My dear friends, there is no political conflict in the country, but there is a political crisis, in that context there is some unrest. How could we provide definitions and analysis for the words of conflict, issues and unrest. Resolving the issues and management of those issues are a form of science. The resolving of political matters is a science. It is a great subject.

Where does this political conflict and crisis come out? How was it created? What is its background? On January 8, 2015, I bow my head with gratitude to 6.25 million people who elected me as the President. I would like to say that, the decision I took on November 21, 2014, is more correct today than it was at that time. It was a decision that was needed in that era. I also say that the political decision taken on October 26 was also a correct political decision. The political decision taken on the 21st of November, 2014, is also correct, similar to the political decision taken on October 26, 2018. It is a decision taken for the country and based on political principles. I took these political decisions to build a spiritually, ethical and healthy society, which is against corruption and fraud. My decisions also to build a society based on the great vision of the SLFP for the progress and development of the country. I took these decisions after much deliberation and in this short time ot is not possible to give a long explanation. In particular, both political decisions were based on same political principle. It was the matter of only one political agenda. This political agenda contains many common issues, such as the opposition to corruption, the strengthening of democracy, building a high-quality society in the country and safeguarding our heritage.

On January 9th 2015, Ranil Wickremesinghe, took oath from the President and sworn in as the Prime Minister and he undertook an unacceptable political path to assault and rape the concept of good governance. He brutally destroyed it. I acted with utmost patience for the last three and a half years. It was not an easy one. My colleague cabinet knows that situation. The government knows that situation too. The country knows about that three and half years of conflict. So, it’s not a sudden decision that Mr. Wickremesinghe was removed and Mr. Rajapaksa was appointed as Prime Minister. It was a decision taken while continuing a challenging path for three and half years.

Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe brutally destroyed the political concept of good governance and destroyed the country too. And also, he destroyed the most important significant political party, United National Party, which had historical value in the political arena. Not only that, he destroyed me for a measure. Ranil Wickremesinghe, who destroyed the country, destroyed the good governance, destroyed the UNP and destroyed me for a measure; we have to give an answer for his action. So, I decided, that the only one solution is to remove him from the position of Prime Minister. We should go our own political way. You know that, I revealed last time that he was corrupt when I told the nation about the Central Bank robbery. He wanted to take back some of the powers devolved to the Provincial Councils. He wanted to present some bills to parliament to take away some powers vested in the Provincial Council by the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and return them to Parliament. I rejected many of the proposals that he brought in. And, I controlled his actions using my power as much as I wanted it to be. But, as a tough and stubborn man, he used an extreme right wing neo liberal political philosophy to destroy this country.

He hoodwinked the people in the North. He deliberately neglected to give the opportunity to settle the issues of the people in the North. Under these circumstances, the political decision taken was correct forever as it is correct today. I took the decision to remove Ranil Wickremesinghe and to appointed Mahinda Rajapaksa to the Prime Minister and to develop a political program suitable to this country and to protect and strengthen the political path of those who follow an intellectual, ethical political path.

I have released five Gazette Announcements. There was One Gazatte to remove the former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsighe using the executive powers. Another one to appoint Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister. Another one to cancel the Cabinet of ministers, and another Gazette announcement to prorogue the Parliament and later to dissolve the Parliament. I would like to clearly admit that I signed all these five announcements using executive powers with pure intentions and to ensure democracy, to build a country with human values, deprived of corruption. This political turmoil is a new experience to our country after 47.That is for the politicians, people and government officers, yet this is not new to the world. These types of incidents are evident in countries where democracy prevails. I condemn the conflicts and ill-behavior occurred in the parliament without being biased to parties. It is neither appropriate at all since we must win our conflicts in a democratic manner. We cannot win it with physical strength or strength of the muscles but with clear thought and keen intellect.

Considering all these factors we should pay attention to the prevailing circumstances around us today. Many applicants went to the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal within the last few weeks. The Courts have not given a final decision regarding those cases. The cases were not    completely examined so far. Several interim orders were given. There are so many cases in the courts. What are those cases actually? These are not murder cases, these are not cases of theft, and these are not cases of abusing women, these are nothing but political cases and there are different opinions in the country regarding those cases. I always respect the court; I accept all the decisions made by the courts with honor and respect. But people hold different opinions regarding the decisions made by the courts.

Within this political turmoil we behave with discipline and adhering to the legal constraints to always protect the constitution. Especially considering this situation I clearly told the UNP members who gathered yesterday since they have met me three times already while entering in to more cordial discussions with every party and I will admit the same thing again that I have told yesterday to the UNP party members that there are 225 in the Parliament, even though all 225 will sign a request, I will not make Ranil Wickremesighe Prime Minister again. That is not a personal issue between us or an issue with colour or party. I do this since he is not compatible to the politics of our country. His is vision is not suitable to our country. His thinking pattern does not tally with our culture, heritage, our values, locality, heritage, culture, customs and Buddhist ethics doesn’t prevail with him.

So that, I must clearly state that, the political decisions that I have taken now have caused anger and lack of faith and there’s hatred in the UNP members and the people who made efforts to make me the President. Dear UNP members, your most reputable leader has already destroyed your most dignified party. That glorious great party which was led by such massive figures like D.S. Senanayake, Dudley Senanayake, J.R. Jayewardene, Ranasighe Premadasa, though we have certain issues with their political vision, yet all these leaders loved the country and all these leaders loved this motherland which are yours and mine. All these leaders felt the hardships of the people living in this soil. But Ranil Wickremesighe didn’t feel anything.

Thus considering all these circumstances we have to accomplish the duties we have towards the country tomorrow. We must strengthen SLFP in order to do that. I will not allow weakening of the SLFP. As I told before the Neo Liberalism of Ranil Wickremesighe will only be opposed by the SLFP which is the only party with loyalty and love for the motherland.

I assure that the current political turmoil will be over within 7 days from today. I clearly certify that the political turmoil will be completely over within a week ahead. That is for the sake of public, the country and you, and the children to be born tomorrow. I extend my hands of friendship towards all the political leaders with peace to solve this issue. We will solve this issue together. I didn’t make this problem and I must admit that Ranil Wickremesighe is the one who destroyed this country. We will pay for that political sin together. All of you are the devotees of that mission. Everyone must become a part of the sacred tray of flower offering for such a meritorious deed. We will save the country with those merits and blessings.

Thus, today, I highly appreciate the contribution made by all the members of the party towards this great major public convention organized under the theme, “the decision is made for the sake of the country”.
