If the environment is not protected, the country will be a desert within 15 -20 years, President Maithripala Sirisena said.
Therefore, the President requests all the people to be sensitive to the environment and to protect all human beings and flora and fauna by preventing the country from becoming a desert.
President said that the Pinus plantations in the Dunumadalawa forest reserve should be removed. He was speaking at the launching ceremony of the local forestry program yesterday (06th) in Dunumadalawa.
The President said that the Pinus plantations in the Dunumadalawa Forest Reserve belonging to the Kandy Municipal Council were removed and the local forest plantations were replaced instead.
The program ”Thuru Prajawa” to protect the bio-diversity was launched. President Sirisena planted a Mee Tree in the Dunumadalawa forest reserve to mark the occasion.
The President pointed out that the country would be a desert if the felling of trees go on for another 15-20 years. He stressed that all parties should commit themselves unconditionally to protect the countryside for the future generation.
Governor of Central Province Mr. Maithri Gunarathne, North Central Province Governor Mr. Sarath Ekanayake, Mayor of Matale Mr. Daljith Aluvihare, Deputy Mayor of Kandy Ms. Ilani Abdeen, Vice Chancellor of University of Peradeniya Prof. Upul Dissanayeka and several others were also present on this event.
