President opens the new drugs manufacturing factory of SPC

President Maithripala Sirisena opened the newly built drugs manufacturing factory of the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation of Sri Lanka (SPC), today (12).

This new factory has been built with state-of-the-art facilities in Kandawala, Ratmalana with the financial support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency at a cost of 1240 million Japanese Yen.

The current production capacity of the SPC per year is 1922 million pills or tablets. As a result of this project, it will increase to 3337 million. It is expected to cover 70% of the pharmaceuticals need of the Medical Supplies Division (MSD) of Ministry of Health.

In addition to building this factory, the Ministry of Health has signed agreements with 46 local and foreign pharmaceuticals manufacturers to new factories in the country. According to those agreements, 03 new factories have been constructed in Horana, Kandy and Digana areas and the products of those factories are supplied to the Medical Supplies Division. Three more pharmaceutical factories will be opened in the early part of the year 2019.

The President after unveiling the plaque made an observational tour of the factory.

Minister of Health Rajitha Senarathne, Deputy Minister Faizal Cassim, the Chairman of SPC Mr. Sayuru Samarasundara and others participated on this occasion.
