The “Shilpa Abhimani” Presidential Handicraft Award Ceremony jointly organized by the Ministry of Industry & Commerce and National Crafts Council was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at the BMICH, today (28). This event was organized with the aim of nurturing and preserving of the handicrafts sector in Sri Lanka.
The Presidential Handicraft Award Ceremony held to felicitate the winners of “Shilpa Abhimani” Handicrafts competition and Exhibition.
This “Shilpa Abhimani” Handicrafts Exhibition was held under 21 main handicraft sectors as well as under 57 sub sectors at provincial levels and the winning creations were presented in the national competition.
Thus the Handicrafts exhibition and competition was held until 2015, from 2016 it was named as Presidential Handicrafts Competition, distributing awards, trophies, and certificates and monetary gifts from the President.
Today many artistes who are engaging in creative work mastering the traditional knowledge in crafts, thus preserving the Sri Lankan cultural heritage at the same time were presented with “Swarna” award and “Rajatha” award and monetary gifts and certificates by the President.
The President handed over medals and cash prizes to the four artistes who were feted at the 2017 International Handicrafts Awards Festival representing National Crafts Council (NCC).
Later, the President joined with the artistes to attend the exhibition and the competition organized concurrent to this event.
Minister Vajira Abeywardena, K.D.N. Ranjit Ashoka, Secretary to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Heshani Bogollagama, Chairperson of NCC, and other officials joined this event.
