World leaders congratulate new President

Regional leaders yesterday extended their congratulations to President-elect Gotabaya Rajapaksa on his landslide victory in the Presidential Election.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a Twitter message congratulated the incoming President on his victory. “I look forward to working closely with you for deepening the close and fraternal ties between our two countries and citizens, and for peace, prosperity as well as security in our region.” PM Modi said.

“I also congratulate the people of Sri Lanka for the successful conduct of the elections.” PM Modi said.

In a reply tweet the President-elect  said, “I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India for your warm wishes. Our two nations are bound by history and common beliefs and I look forward to strengthening our friendship and meeting you in the near future.”

In a statement, the Pakistan Government and its leader also felicitated the new President.

“Pakistan appreciates the conduct of a free, fair, and peaceful election by the Election Commission and the Government of Sri Lanka. The leadership of Pakistan looks forward to working with the new President and his team to further strengthen the already strong relationship between the two countries. The Government of Pakistan expresses the resolve to further fortify the fraternal ties and to take this vital partnership to a new level,” the statement said.

Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih issuing a tweet via his official Twitter page stated, “Warm congratulations to President-elect Gotabaya Rajapaksa for a resounding election victory in Sri Lanka. I look forward to working with your new administration to further the already close and fraternal ties between Maldives and Sri Lanka.”

Meanwhile, U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka and to the Maldives Alaina B. Teplitz has also extended her congratulations via Twitter.

She said she congratulates the people of Sri Lanka on their democratic election and said that she “looks forward to working with President-elect Rajapaksa on issues of good governance, economic growth, the advancement of human rights and reconciliation in support of a strong, sovereign Sri Lanka.”
