Gihan Kavinda Hettiarachchi of Gampaha Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, who made a miniature rocket, met President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat, today (06).
During the meeting, the President was presented a brief documentary on the progress of the rocket and the future plans to develop it. The President also pledged to provide necessary support in this regard in the future too.
The rocket developed by student Gihan Hettiarachchi drawn the attention of President Sirisena when he attended the school’s Centenary Celebrations as the Chief Guest and opened the X-Ban Exhibition held to showcase student talents. During this event the President appreciated the talent of the student and promised to provide necessary financial assistance to carry out the further developments to the rocket.
Accordingly, Rs.one million was donated to the student as the initial financial assistance.
Also, the President summoned the technical officers of the Sri Lanka Air Force and instructed them to provide necessary assistance to the student to launch the rocket.
Commander of Sri Lanka Air Force, Air Marshal Sumangala Dias, Air Vice Marshal M.D. Rathnayake and others participated on this occasion.
